When humans finally invent the ability to teleport, it won’t be magic. We won’t simply be able to blink twice and be anywhere in the world we want. It’ll be one of the biggest scientific and technological breakthroughs in history.
A technical system – just like the Internet – will need a technical solution to addressing. We’ll need to know the unique address for the place (and time) we want to teleport. We’ll need the teleportation equivalent of the Internet’s TCI/IP system, as well as a network of domain name servers to translate the arcane numerical address into real-world, recognizable, usable address names.
Simply put, you don’t want to pop into the same place at the same time as someone else. And you don’t want to pop into the middle of a wall, mountain, or lake by mistake. Registered domain names attached to known, safe physical spaces will help us avoid unpleasant accidents.

Of course not. No one has demonstrated the ability to teleport yet. And it might be decades – or centuries – before we can. (Japanese professor Michio Kaku has predicted that humans will invent the technology for teleportation in the 22nd century.) But why wouldn’t you want to brag about owning a piece of teleportation real estate now? It’ll cost you less than a fancy cup of coffee a year. And maybe someone will come along and want to buy your teleport domain name for a lot more than a few bucks.
Not yet, but soon. POP Teleport will launch a teleport domain name marketplace in late 2014. You’ll be able to advertise your teleport domain for sale at a reserve price or best offer, or transfer the domain to a specific individual. POP Teleport will hold your domain in escrow. After the buyer makes the payment, POP Teleport will release the domain to them and release their payment to you. You can make as much profit as you want. We might be jealous, but we’ll be happy for you!
Yes. Of course, choosing a physical location from a map doesn’t give you any legal rights to use that spot for any purpose. But it sure is fun to think that sometime later this century, your POP Teleport domain could give you the right to run a teleportation point of presence at the geographic location you choose.
